Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain stably and inexpensively a single-mode optical fiber with a small loss over a wide wavelength range by using SiCl4 and GeCl4 as starting materials for a core and regulating the concn. of the GeCl4 to a specified wt. percentage to the SiCl4. CONSTITUTION:For example, 350cc/min SiCl4 and 2l/min O2 are introduced into a quartz tube and heated with an oxyhydrogen flame to deposit an SiO2 glass layer on the inner wall of the tube as a clad layer. Next, 80cc/min SiCl4, 65-100wt% GeCl4 to the amount of the SiCl4 and 2l/min O2 are introduced into the quartz tube and heated with an oxyhydrogen flame to obtain a solid base material for a single-mode optical fiber.
