Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate a polishing process by forming a round rodlike inner core part and an outer core part having a specified shape and specified refractive indexes on the inner core part by a CVD method and further forming a clad part having a refractive index between the indexes of the core parts. CONSTITUTION:While rotating and pulling up a support rod 3 at a constant rate, gases shown by the figure are sprayed on the bottom of the rod 3 from a burner 11 for an inner core, and SiO2.GeO2 glass is deposited and grown by flame hydrolysis to form an inner core part 4 having a prescribed length. Gases shown by the figure are then sprayed as flames simultaneously from burners 12-15 arranged around the rod 3 perpendicularly to each other at a position just above the burner 11 at prescribed time intervals to grow outer cores 5, 7 of SiO2.GeO2 glass and outer cores 6, 8 of SiO2.B2O3 glass in the form of ridges at positions making 90 deg. angle. A clad part 9 of SiO2 glass is further formed to a prescribed thickness with a burner 16 to obtain a porous glass base material 10.
