Abstract
PURPOSE:A glass pipe and a glass rod are arranged so that their center axes are made to coincide with each other and the gap is filled with low-refractive index glass to form the parent material, which is melt spun into optical fibers with large diameter, high roundness in cross section, and reduced light loss. CONSTITUTION:Quartz glass tube 21 and quartz glass rod for optics with low light loss 22 is arranged so that their center axes are made to coincide with each other and the gap between them is filled with pieces of glass of low refractive index 31 as SiO2-B2O3 glass. They are heated from the outside of quartz tube 21 to melt the pieces of glass 31 to form solid parent material 10. The resulting material is set in the heater 26 and molten at the end by heating to take up the optical fiber 27 and wound up on drum 28. As the deformation of the core material is scarcely accompanied, optical fibers with the core part of high roundness can readily be obtained.
