Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an image fiber with improved radiation resistance by using SiO2 glass manufactured by flame hydrolysis as a core and forming a clad on the outside of the core. CONSTITUTION:Gaseous SiCl4 or SiH4 as starting material is fed to a burner 10, and O2 and H2 as combustion gases are also fed to the burner 10. Steam of about 700 deg.C is produced with an oxyhydrogen flame of O2 and H2, and the starting material is hydrolyzed in the steam to form fine glass particles. The particles are deposited on a substrate 11 as porous glass 12, and the glass 12 is put in a heating furnace 13 and converted into transparent glass by heating to about 1,500 deg.C. The resulting glass is used as core glass, and SiO2 glass with refractive index lowered by doping with F or B and F is formed on the outside of the core glass as a clad. Both the core and the clad are unitedly melted by heating and spun into a fiber. After melt-spinning said core glass into a fiber as it is, the outside of the fiber is coated with resin with lower refractive index to form a clad.
