Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain glass with remarkably low water content by bubbling a gaseous chloride convertible into a glass component in molten glass to remove water in the glass as HCl. CONSTITUTION:Quartz muffle 2 is put in electric furnace 1, quartz crucible 3 holding starting materials for glass is placed in muffle 2, and bubbler 4 is set in curcible 3 so that the branch pipe section of bubbler 4 is dipped in molten glass 6 in curcible 3. A gaseous chloride convertible into a glass component is fed into bubbler 4 through main pipe 4A protruded from furnace 1 to bubble molten glass 6. During melting the starting materials a dry gas such as dry N2 is fed into furnace 1 through gas feed pipe 7 made of quartz. The gaseous chloride such as gaseous SiCl4 is well dried by passing through a hygroscopic agent-packed bed or other means before blowing into glass 6.
