Abstract

PURPOSE:To economically obtain high purity glass useful as a material for optical fiber, heating containers for the semiconductor industry, etc. by heat treating powder glass in a chlorine-contg. gas stream to convert the glass into molten glass. CONSTITUTION:Relatively low purity glass powder is heat treated in a chlorine- contg. gas stream to be converted into molten glass. By heating the powder using a fluidized bed held at a high temp. the purification efficiency is enhanced. As carrier gas nitrogen gas and oxygen gas may be used besides inert gas such as argon or helium. In case OH is allowed to remain in the molten glass, hydrogen gas can be used.
