Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce high purity Al and H2 by reacting impure Al heated to a specified temp. with AlCl3 and steam after which the reaction product gas is treated to remove dust and cooled.
CONSTITUTION: Small lumps of impure Al contg. much Fe and Si, e.g. 45% Al are put into a reactor, where they are heated to about 1000°C by introducing CH4 and O2. Next by stopping the gas introduction and introducing AlCl3 and water the following reactions take place: 2AlCl3+3H2O=Al2O3+6HCl and 6HCl+ 6Al=6AlCl+3H2. The reaction product gas contg. a little dust, AlCl and H2 is fed into a dust removing device of above 900°C packed with small lumps of impure Al to remove the dust. The dust-free gas is then supplied to a decomposition unit and cooled to about 800°C to obtain high purity molten Al, gaseous AlCl3 and H2 according to equation 6AlCl+3H2=4Al+2AlCl3+3H2.
