Abstract
A method of removing manganese from calcium comprises incorporating aluminium in the calcium and distilling calcium from the mass. The aluminium may be melted with the calcium to form an alloy. They may be melted together under reduced pressure in the presence of argon, the pressure then being further reduced and the calcium distilled. In a preferred example the calcium and aluminium are melted in the presence of argon at 800 to 850 DEG C. and a pressure of about 5mm. of mercury, and the pressure is reduced to about 0.05mm. while distilling the calcium. A preferred range for the amount of aluminium melted is 0.1 to 15 per cent, calcium containing not more than 0.002 per cent of manganese being produced on distillation.
