Abstract

A method of purifying magnesium metal containing manganese comprises melting the metal with 5 to 20 per cent of aluminium or carbon and obtaining purer magnesium from the melt under reduced pressure. The melting may be effected in an atmosphere of inert gas, argon being preferred, at a pressure of about 5mm. of mercury, the distillation being effected at a pressure of about 0.05mm. or less, and at a temperature of about 775 DEG C. the magnesium being condensed to solid form.
