Abstract
Magnesium is reduced from its oxide or oxychloride by means of calcium carbide at the time of the production of the carbide or while the carbide is still at a very high temperature from its production, the reduction being effected in a reducing or inert atmosphere and in the absence of moisture, nitrogen, and oxygen, and in some cases under reduced pressure. The resulting slag may be removed in dry form, or a liquid slag may be obtained by the addition of fluxes such as magnesium or aluminium fluoride. The magnesium vapours may be condensed to metal, or alloys may be obtained directly by condensing the vapour in contact with other molten metal.
