Abstract

In the production of magnesium from magnesium compounds such as the oxide, the compound is first treated to produce magnesium nitride, the nitride is heated with sulphuretted hydrogen at about 900 DEG C. to obtain magnesium sulphide, and the sulphide reduced by heating with calcium carbide in an atmosphere of a reducing gas such as hydrogen or gaseous hydrocarbons or of an inert gas such as argon, and in the substantial absence of moisture, nitrogen or oxygen. The nitride may be formed by passing nitrogen through a powdered mixture of magnesium oxide and a carbonaceous reducing agent at say 1500 DEG C. in the absence of moisture. The magnesium may be distilled off in a current of gas inert towards magnesium and be collected in vacuo or in an atmosphere of hydrogen, argon, or other gas having no action on liquid or vaporized magnesium. The magnesium vapours may be directly combined with other metals such as aluminium or beryllium to form alloys therewith. Specification 465,421, [Group II], is referred to.ALSO:In a process for the production of magnesium, a magnesium compound such as the oxide is converted to magnesium nitride, the nitride is heated with sulphuretted hydrogen at about 900 DEG C. to obtain magnesium sulphide, and the sulphide is reduced by heating with calcium carbide in an atmosphere of a reducing gas such as hydrogen or gaseous hydrocarbons or of an inert gas such as argon, and in the substantial absence of moisture, nitrogen, or oxygen. The magnesium may be distilled off in a current of gas inert towards magnesium and be collected in vacuo or in an atmosphere of hydrogen, argon, or other gas having no action on liquid or vaporized magnesium.
