Abstract
Reactive or atomic hydrogen is obtained by the alternate formation of a hydride of the alkali or alkaline-earth metals and its subsequent decomposition to form the metal and reactive hydrogen. For example, lithium hydride may be formed by treatment of the metal with hydrogen, e.g. at 500-700 DEG C., or by reaction of lithium nitride with hydrogen, and is subsequently decomposed by heating or by electrolysis in the molten state. The hydrogen used should be free from oxygen, air, moisture or other substances liable to reconvert atomic into molecular hydrogen, and if desired may first be passed through an accumulator formed of sheets of metals which readily occlude hydrogen, e.g. palladium. The reactive hydrogen readily reduces oxides, sulphides and halides to metal, e.g. magnesium sulphide to magnesium, and may be used for hydrogenation processes. Specification 482,157, [Group II], is referred to.
