Abstract

In a process for the production of Ti by the reaction of titanium halide with a reducing metal, the reducing metal is obtained-at a temperature at which it reacts with the halide-by electrolysis of a salt melt. The reducing metal, e.g. alkali or alkaline earth metal, may be reacted directly in the electrolytic cell with titanium halide in the melt or with gaseous titanium halide in the space above the melt or may be transferred to a separate reaction chamber. In one example, titanium tetrachloride at atmospheric pressure is passed into an electrolytic cell having as electrolyte a molten mixture of potassium-magnesium chloride and barium chloride at 680 DEG C. After passage of current for some time, magnesium titanide is taken from the cell bottom and the magnesium is removed from this by (a) heating for 3 hours at 1000 DEG C. in a vacuum of 0,1 Torr or (b) leaching with 50 per cent acetic acid, washing and drying or (c) heating for 3 hours at 820 DEG C. in a salt bath such as that used for the electrolyte. This latter separation can be caused in the cell itself during electrolysis by raising the temperature in the cell to 750 DEG -950 DEG C., the magnesium which separates reducing further titanium tetrachloride. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 698,151, [Group XXXVI].
