Abstract
A refractory metal, e.g. Ti, Zr, U, Th, V, is produced by reacting its oxide with one or more alkali metals and one or more halides of calcium at elevated temperature. The reaction is performed in an inert atmosphere at 800 DEG -900 DEG C. for at least 30 minutes with agitation of the reactants. The reactions may be performed in several stages, the product from each stage being treated with further alkali metal and calcium halide. The reaction may also be performed as a continuous process, any unreacted alkali metal being distilled off from the refractory metal and returned to the reaction chamber. The alkali metal may be formed by electrolysis of a molten salt bath (see Group XXXVI) and the refractory metal oxide added at the cathode to produce the required metal.
