Abstract
An aqueous spent acrylonitrile synthesis catalyst containing (a) cuprous chloride, (b) at least one alkali or alkaline earth chloride or ammonium chloride and (c) carbon-containing impurities is regenerated by precipitating the copper as cuprous hydroxide, separating the precipitate and reconverting to cuprous chloride by reaction with hydrochloric acid. Preferably the spent catalyst is added to an aqueous liquor containing an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide (particularly NaOH, but Ca(OH)2 is also specified), which may be in 10-25% excess, and the resulting mixture is heated, a precipitation temperature of 70-90 DEG C. being particularly preferred. Other preferred features are: - (1) an inert atmosphere is maintained over the reaction mixture during precipitation; (2) copper powder is present during precipitation; (3) precipitated cuprous hydroxide is centrifugally separated above 60 DEG C.; (4) the precipitate is reslurried with dilute caustic alkali and thereafter separated above 60 DEG C.; (5) KCl is added to the precipitate prior to reaction with HCl, in an amount to give a KCl:NaCl ratio of substantially 3 : 1 in the regenerated catalyst.
