Abstract

A process for the extraction of metals from solutions consists in precipitating one or more metals, such as copper, as sulphides by reaction with sulphur and sulphuretted hydrogen, produced by burning, calcining or distilling a sulphur-bearing mineral, such as pyrites, in the presence of steam. The residual gas, which contains sulphur dioxide, is reduced continuously by means of incandescent carbonaceous matter as described in Specification 158,288, and the products, which include sulphur and sulphuretted hydrogen, may be used for the precipitation of metallic sulphides. Reduction is best effected when the proportion of sulphur dioxide is 7 per cent of the total volume of gas.ALSO:A process for the extraction of metals from solutions consists in precipitating one or more metals, such as copper, as sulphides by reaction with sulphur and sulphuretted hydrogen, produced by burning, calcining, or distilling a sulphur-bearing mineral, such as pyrites, in the presence of steam. The residual gas, which contains sulphur dioxide, is reduced continuously by means of incandescent carbonaceous matter as described in Specification p 158,288, [Class 1 (ii), Inorganic compounds &c.], and the products, which include sulphur and sulphuretted hydrogen, may be used for the precipitation of metallic sulphides. Reduction is best effected when the proportion of sulphur dioxide is 7 per cent of the total volume of gas.
