Abstract

Tar oils, recovering &c.-In the recoveryof ammonia, pitch, and oil from coal gas, the gas is cooled to a temperature of 200-250‹ C. according to the desired melting point of the pitch, and the heavy tar and pitch particles in suspension are precipitated in an electrical precipitator, whereupon the creosote oil vapours are condensed, the ammonia is extracted, and the light oils and benzol are removed. The creosote oil composition contains heavy constituents of a greasy or resinous character blended with lighter oil constituents. Tar acids may be removed by treatment with a 10 per cent solution of caustic soda, and freed from the resulting solution by treatment with carbon dioxide. The oil yields substantially no distillate at temperatures up to 200‹ C. Specification 289,378, [Class 55 (ii), Gas manufacture, &c.], is referred to.
