Ammoniacal liquor, treating.-In the recovery of bye-products in coke-oven or like plants the aqueous portion of the condensate which is deposited on cooling the hot distillates is treated for the removal of phenols, the concentration of phenols in this condensation being much higher than in the crude ammoniacal liquor containing also the liquor from the gas washers. The distillates may be cooled in stages and the aqueous portion of the fraction or fractions containing the greater quantity of the phenols treated for removal of the latter. Suitable solvents for treating the condensates are solvent naphtha or a high boiling tar oil and the condensates may be clarified by filtration, adsorption with coal dust or by allowing the mixture to stand before treatment. The phenols are recovered from solution by fractional distillation or by treatment with an alkali to form alkali phenolates. Specification 28072/12 is referred to.
