Abstract
294,526. Newport Co., (Assignees of Gubelmann, I., and Henke, C. E.). July 25, 1927, [Convention date]. Grant of Patent opposed. Resits.-Wood or gum rosin is purified and decolourized by treating a solution of it in a solvent relatively immiscible with resorcinol, with resorcinol, and then separating the resorcinol containing the impurities and colouring matter from the purified rosin solution. The solvent is preferably a volatile hydrocarbon such as petroleum naphtha, gasoline, turpentine, &c., the treatment with resorcinol being effected at an elevated temperature and separation effected by cooling and decantation. The resorcinol may be recovered for reuse by extracting both the rosin solution and the solid mass of resorcinol and impurities with water, and then evaporating the resultant water solution of resorcinol. The process is particularly applicable to a commercial solution containing rosin, pine oil, and other terpenes, which is usually obtained by extracting resinous woods with petroleum naphtha.
