Abstract

Calcium and silicon-aluminium alloy are obtained by distilling a mixture of Ca/Al and Si/Ca in an inert atmosphere under a pressure of 0.1 to 1.0m mercury and recovering the metallic calcium. The temperature may be 1320-1350 DEG C. and the atmosphere argon freed from nitrogen. The Al/Ca may be obtained by the alumino-thermic reduction of lime and the Si/Ca by electro-thermic reduction of silica with calcium or calcium carbide. The amount of Al and Si present in the condensed Ca is dependent on the relative proportions of Ca/Al and Si/Ca used, e.g. 64 per cent Ca/Al and 36 per cent Ca/Si gives Ca containing 0.17 per cent Si and 1.60 per cent Al, and 40 per cent Ca/Al and 60 per cent Si/Ca gives Ca containing 0.53 per cent Si and 1.1 per cent Al.
