543,468. Distilling metals; purifying argon. GENTIL. H. L., and ALLOY PROCESSES, Ltd. Aug. 23, 1940, No. 13394. Drawings to Specification. [Class 82 (i)] [Also in Groups III and XXVIII] Volatilizable metals other than magnesium, particularly aluminium, are distilled and condensed under reduced pressure by continuously admitting a neutral gas such as argon to the zone of evaporation, carrying the vapours by the gas stream to the zone of condensation, and continuously withdrawing the neutral gas from the condenser. The reduced pressure may be less than 10 mm. of mercury. Aluminium may be distilled from an iron-silicon-aluminium alloy which may have been produced as described in Specification 532,115. The argon may be used cyclically, the impure argon withdrawn from the condenser being returned to a liquid air plant. The neon, oxygen, and nitrogen from this plant may be separately used; the nitrogen may be brought into contact in a suitable furnace with aluminous material, coke, and a catalyst for the production of aluminium nitride which may be treated with steam for the production of alumina, from which the iron-silicon-aluminium alloy may be obtained, and of ammonia which can be utilized as such or converted into nitric acid or ammonium nitrate by means of the oxygen from the liquid air plant.
