Abstract

1315003 Separation of argon from air L'AIR LIQUIDE SOC ANON POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITATION DES PROCEDES GEORGES CLAUDE 4 May 1970 [5 May 1969] 21424/70 Heading F4P In a three component gas mixture rectification process for the production of a component present in small proportion and of boiling point intermediate those of the remaining two components, e.g. argon, oxygen and nitrogen respectively a gaseous fraction is withdrawn at an intermediate level 8 from the low pressure stage 2 of a double column 1, 2 passed to an auxiliary rectification column 4 where it is in part condensed by vaporization in a condenser 7 of a liquid fraction withdrawn from the main column and the condensate is returned at 9 to said intermediate level. As shown cooling of condenser 7 is effected by a liquid oxygen fraction withdrawn from the: column 2 through a line 14 and the so-vaporized oxygen is withdrawn as product at 114. Reflux for column 4 is provided by a condenser 6 cooled by crude liquid oxygen, and product argon-rid gas is withdrawn at 11. In a modification condenser (7), Fig. 2 (not shown), is cooled by liquid nitrogen withdrawn from the top of column 1 thereby obtaining product gaseous nitrogen; product oxygen being withdrawn from column (2) through line (14).
