Production of an oxygen-rich gaseous fraction from compressed air having been freed of readily condensible impurities and cooled to about liquefaction temperature in reversing indirect heat exchangers 1, 2 and 3, Fig. 1 (not shown), is effected by fractional condensation in a condenser 4 having a feed inlet line 22 and an outlet line 29 through which oxygenrich liquid is withdrawn, supercooled in an exchanger 5 traversed by gaseous nitrogen withdrawn from the head of condenser 4 through a line 34 and having been expanded, e.g. at a turbine 41 and the so-cooled oxygenrich liquid is then vaporized by indirect heat exchange within condenser 4 with feed air withdrawn through a line 24 and warmed in exchangers 1 to 3 and discharged as product through a line 13. In a modification, part of the oxygen-rich vapour leaving the condenser 4, Fig. 5 (not shown), is blown into the base of a rectifying column 6 supplied at its head with residual nitrogen from the head of condenser 4 and having been liquefied by heat exchange at 55 with liquid withdrawn from the base of column 6, the nitrogen being expanded at a value 44 prior to passage through exchanger 5.
