Abstract
1304568 Cold separation of gas mixtures LINDE AG 8 Sept 1970 [13 Aug 1970] 42852/70 Heading F4P Separation of a low boiling point component, e.g. hydrogen from a compressed gas mixture delivered by a compressor 12 and containing a relatively high boiling point component, e.g. carbon monoxide and/or methane is effected by cooling the feed mixture by passage through heat exchanger 13, 14, 15 to effect partial condensation, separating crude hydrogen gas at 18 and further cooling at 20 thereby effecting further condensation, separating at 21 hydrogen of the required purity, warming it in exchanger 20, work-expanding it at 23, delivering a portion 24 thereof as product at 28 after further expansion at 25 and recovery of cold in exchangers 20, 26, 15, 13 and adding to the remainder at a point 30 a portion of condensate withdrawn from separator 32 and throttle-expanded at 31. recovering the cold from the mixture so formed by passage through exchangers 20, 15, 13 and then returning through a line 11 to the inlet of compressor 12. The remainder of the condensate withdrawn from 21 is expanded at 42 into a stripper 43 whilst part of the condensate withdrawn from separator 18 is expanded at 36 into a stripper 37. A liquid mixture of CO and CH 4 is withdrawn from strippers 37, 43 and is expanded through lines 39, 40, 44 into a rectification column 41. CH 4 - free CO overhead in a line 45 is in part discharged as product gas and the remainder is condensed at 26 and discharged as product liquid CO. Bottoms liquid mostly methane is vaporized at 15, 13 and is discharged through a line 47.
