Abstract
611,930. Distilling metals. NATIONAL SMELTING CO., Ltd., and ROBSON, S. March, 12, 1946, No. 7621. [Class 82(i)] In a process for the condensation of zinc from gases containing zinc vapour the gases are brought directly from the furnace (or after a preliminary surface condensation) into intimate contact with a mechanically produced shower of molten metal at a temperature below the dew point for zinc and scrubbed and stripped of a large proportion of their zinc content and then passed to a vertical stack situated centrally above the spray producing device so that the residual zinc vapour is precipitated as blue powder which falls into the shower of molten metal and is thereby absorbed, dissolved or entrained, as metal for future recovery. As shown, the gases containing zinc vapour pass into a chamber 1 containing a spray producing device 2 such as a rotating paddle wheel and most of the zinc in condensed by this metallic spray, which may be zinc or lead as described in Specification 572,961, the residual gas passing through a thin walled metallic stack 5 situated centrally above the paddle wheel 2 and wherein any zinc is precipitated as blue powder which falls through the spray into the liquid metal pool 3. The gases may first pass through a surface condenser as described in Specification 611,928 or there may be two or more spraying chambers as described in Specification 611,929. The spray producing device may be of the forms described in these two latter Specifications.
