Abstract

572,961. Extracting zinc. NATIONAL SMELTING CO., Ltd., ROBSON, S., and DERHAM, L. J. March 13, 1943, Nos. 4131/43 and 3176/44. [Class 82 (i)] In a method of condensing zinc from a gaseous mixture containing both zinc vapour and carbon dioxide or other gas capable of reacting with zinc vapour, the gases are shock-chilled by being brought into intimate contact with molten lead or molten leadrich alloy, the temperature of which is not greater than 550‹ C. The molten lead or alloy is circulated through a cooler, in which the zinc separates and is removed, and the lead or lead alloy is re-employed for condensing further quantities of zinc. The process may be employed for treating gases obtained by smelting zinc ores in a blast furnace, e.g. as described in Specification 572,960, in which the gases liberated in the shaft 1, Fig. 1, of the furnace pass out through a heated coke column 10 and up through a packed tower 20 down which is 'showered molten lead or lead alloy which has been elevated from a cooler 30 into which it runs from the base of the tower. Alternatively, the gases may pass through a spray or curtain of molten lead or alloy thrown up by a paddle-wheel 57; or they may pass a baffle 41 depending into the molten lead or alloy 42 contained in a chamber 40.
