Abstract

572,960. Extracting zinc. NATIONAL SMELTING CO., Ltd., ROBSON, S., WOODS, S. E., and DERHAM, L. J. March 13, 1943, No. 4129. [Class 82 (i)] In a method of producing zinc, the zinc is reduced from its ores or oxides and volatilised in a blast furnace, the gases leaving the furnace are passed through a bed of carbon or refractory material which is supplied with heat from an external source and from which they emerge still containing at least a substantial proportion of their original carbon dioxide content and with their temperature so correlated with the carbon dioxide concentration that zinc oxide is not formed according to the equation Zn+ CO2#ZnO+CO, and the gases are shockchilled before any appreciable oxidation of the zinc vapour takes place. The reduction charge may consist of sintered zinc blende and metallurgical coke, with burnt lime as a flux, and reduction and volatilization are effected in a blast furnace 1 having tuyeres 3, the zinc vapour and gases passing into a coke column 10 which, by means of electrodes 11, 12 is maintained at a temperature between 1050‹ C. and 1150‹ C. so that reduction of carbon dioxide in the furnace gases takes place in the column, the gases passing therefrom up through a tower 17 packed with coke 18 down which is showered molten lead which condenses and dissolves the zinc vapour. The lead passes from the tower by a pipe 20 to a cooling bath 21 where it is returned by a pump 26 again to the top of the tower 17. In the cooling bath 21 zinc crystals come out of solution from the lead at the bottom and float to the top where they melt and provide a layer of molten zinc which is removed from time to time through an outlet 23. Instead of being shock-chilled by passing up through a shower of molten lead, the zinc vapours may be rapidly condensed to liquid zinc by other methods, e.g. by bubbling them through a bath of molten lead or by passing them through a spray or curtain of molten lead, as described in Specification 572,961.
