561,651. Extraction of alkaline earth metals. MOTRAC MOTORMAHER & TRAKTOREN A. G. Nov. 24, 1942, No. 16644. Convention date, Nov. 24, 1941. [Class 41] In the extraction of the alkaline earth metals Mg, Ca, Ba, Sr and Be, the oxide or carbonate of the metal is heated in a furnace 1 to a temperature a little above the melting point of the chloride, an equimolecular mixture of Cl and CO being passed upwardly through the charge; the molten chloride formed falls into the cell 3 when it is electroloysed, the metal collecting at the iron walls 4 which form the cathode, and chlorine evolved from the carbon anode 8 mixed with CO entering through the pipe 9 passing to the furnace. CO2 evolved from the furnace 1 is reduced by heating with carbon and the CO formed re-introduced. Generator or coke gas or other suitable carbon compound may be made use of as reducing agent in place of CO.
