Abstract

194,314. Rodrian, R. March 3, 1922, [Convention date]. Electrode and electrolytic furnaces.-A charge of metalliferous material is smelted above a body of molten metal, such as lead or lead alloy, and is then electrolyzed with the molten metal as cathode. A furnace for carrying out this process comprises a sheet-iron casing 12 having a firebrick lining 13 forming a flared chamber 14. The roof is made in two parts 15, 16 engaging with a tongue and groove joint and provided with notches forming a central apterture for the positive electrode 18. In the base of the chamber, preferably inset, is a plate of iron, graphite, or other conducting material connected by a lead 33 to the negative terminal. Nozzles 36, 37, preferably downwardly directed, are provided at different levels to inject a mixture of fuel and air. Gas is discharged by a pipe 49, which may contain a suction fan, to a stack. Slag is discharged by an outlet 47, and metal by an outlet 48. The operation may be carried out in the chamber 14 or in a graphite or other crucible 50 set. on the plate 32. In the latter case, molten metal is provided inside and outside the crucible. When ores, minerals, slag or scrap are be treated, metal oxides with or without fluxes may be added. The material is introduced in a finely divided or molten state. Alloys may be formed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 3090/84, 15508/88, 13568/93, and 11643/12, [all in Class 41, Electrolysis].
