Abstract

276,313. Deutsche Gold-und Silber- Scheideanstalt vorm. Roessler. Aug. 23, 1926, [Convention date]. Alkali hydrides are prepared by passing hydrogen at temperatures above 200‹ C. over alkali metal such as sodium distributed on a solid diluent such as common salt, iron powder, sodium carbonate, wood charcoal, &c. The metal and diluent may be ground together, or may be mixed at a temperature above the melting point of the metal. The reaction may be carried out in a slightly inclined rotary tube down which the mixture passes against an upward current of hydrogen which may contain inert gases, and the tube or the current of gas may be heated. The treatment may be commenced by passing alkali metal and diluent into the tube, and subsequently passing only alkali metal, in which case the hydride serves as diluent for the metal.
