Abstract
Uranium is produced in massive form by heating to reaction temperature in an open heat insulated container a mixture of uranium tetrafluoride with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal (including magnesium) or with a mixture or alloy of two or more such metals, preferably in the absence of gases which react with the metals. A small portion of the reaction mixture may be reacted to give a fused mass on to which the remaining mixture is added gradually to maintain the mass fluid while uranium separates from the slag.
