Abstract
A process for the production of an alkali metal other than lithium or an alloy thereof by thermal reduction of an alkali metal compound at a temperature above the boiling point of the said alkali metal, characterized by the step of condensing the alkali metal from the resulting gaseous mixture of metal vapour and gaseous by-product by contacting the said mixture with a liquid metal having a melting point below the boiling point of the said alkali metal. Sodium may be produced by thermal reduction of a sodium compound, e.g., sodium carbonate, and a carbonaceous reducing agent the mixture being heated to a temperature not lower than about 1100 DEG C. The gaseous mixture produced is cooled rapidly by the liquid metal coolant to a temperature not higher than 500 DEG C., e.g., by leading the mixture into a flowing stream of the coolant or into a finely divided descending stream of coolant. The coolant used may be molten sodium, molten lead or a molten lead alloy having a melting point below the boiling point of the alkali metal, e.g., a sodium-lead alloy.
