Abstract
318,705. Elektro-Thermit Ges., and Cr³m, A. G. July 10, 1928. Thermo - aluminic and like chemical-reaction processes.-In welding rails by superheated molten metal in a mould, the superheating is effected by the introduction into the molten metal of gases such as oxygen, hydrogen or chlorine which react exothermically therewith or with certain impurities therein. The superheating may be effected in the crucible in which the metal is melted and the superheated metal then run into the mould containing the rails &c. or the superheating may be effected in the mould itself. Manganese, charcoal, silicon, aluminium or other deoxidizing agent may be added to the molten metal to combine with the gas to produce the superheating and so avoid burning away of the iron. A small quantity of molten metal may be run into the mould and after superheating by gases a quantity of unfused metal may be added and after melting thereof, superheating gas is admitted and then a further quantity of unfused metal added, and so on, until the desired quantity of superheated molten metal is obtained. The initial supply of molten metal may be produced from a thermo-aluminic mixture. A gap may or may not be provided between the ends of the rails &c.
