Abstract

492,266. Iron and steel. ELIAN, J. March 13, 1937, No. 7459. Convention date, March 16, 1936. [Class 72] [Also in Group XII] In a direct process for the manufacture of iron and steel in which sponge iron is produced in a shaft 9 and melted in an open hearth furnace 15, the gas for the reduction of the ore supplied by a producer 1 is. heated in the furnace regenerators 6 and is subsequently used for combustion in the furnace. The sponge iron is cooled by the water jacket 19 and discharged continuously by the worm 18 into a storage chamber 20, from which the open hearth furnace is fed intermittently. Water gas from which tar and sulphur have been removed in purifiers 2, 3, is preferably used as the reducing agent, and its composition may be such that the heat produced by the exothermic reduction by carbon monoxide is sufficient to supply that necessary for the endothermic reduction by hydrogen, and to compensate for the normal heat losses. A suitable gas would contain 40À5 per cent of carbon monoxide and 50À5 per cent of hydrogen.
