Abstract
228,345. Marks, E. C. R., (Sumet Corporation). Feb. 4, 1924. Alloys containing lead, and particularly lead and copper, are made by subjecting molten lead to the action of hydrogen substantially free from oxygen, and mixing such treated lead with the other constituents of the alloy. Preferably water vapour or steam is treated in an iron superheater and the resulting gases are passed into molten lead at a temperature of about 800‹ F, the lead being either cast or added immediately to the required amounts of copper, tin, &c. The method may be used for making bearing and similar alloys containing 10-49.5 per cent of lead, or white metal alloys of low melting point containing 20-90 per cent of lead.
