Abstract
Molten metals and alloys, such as iron, silver, copper, zinc, cadmium, lead, bismuth, antimony, gold, tin, thallium, rhodium, and their alloys, are treated in a molten state with a salt-like hydride of a metal or metals of the alkali, alkaline earth, or rare earth groups, particularly litihum hydride. The material may be used in the form of a brick, block, or briquette, and when this contains lithium hydride it may also contain calcium hydride, or it may contain a hydride of an alloy of lithium with an alkali, alkaline earth, or rare earth metal, or a mixture of hydrides of these metals with or without an excess of one or other of the metals. Further, the material or alloy may be diluted with a metal such as iron, nickel, or copper. Lithium hydride may be accompanied by a lithium-silicon composition. In treating metals or alloys having an affinity for hydrogen, only sufficient hydride is used to take up the gases and impurities. Specific treatments of cast iron, steel, nickel-chromium steel, copper, zinc, nickel, a copper-nickel alloy and silver or a silver alloy, are described. Specification 387,725 is referred to.
