Abstract
282,365. Royen, H. J. van. Dec. 14, 1926, [Convention date]. Purifying.-In the manufacture of pure iron by means of a blast or open-hearth refining process, a reducing non-carbonizing gas, which is not subject to any alteration in volume when oxidized and containing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in proportions varying between 2.5 and 7 parts of carbon monoxide to 1 part of carbon dioxide, is blown through the metal bath. The mixture may contain 25-35 per cent of carbon monoxide, 5-10 per cent of carbon dioxide, and the remainder a neutral gas such as nitrogen. The bath in the converter or open-hearth furnace may be provided with a new layer of slag after the ordinary refining process, and the bath blown in the ordinary way until all the carbonaceous material has been consumed before the introduction of the reductive gas. The iron may be used for the manufacture of alloyed or unalloyed steel. In the case of carbon steels, the bath may be worked with saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons as described in Specification 282,366.
