Abstract

457,181. Water gas generation. NON- POISONOUS GAS HOLDING CO., Ltd., Vaduz, Liechtenstein. Sept. 4, 1935, No. 24681. Convention date, Aug. 9. [Class 55 (i)] An electric current is employed at intervals only, preferably at the times of low current requirement, for providing the heat necessary for carrying out the water gas reaction, the temperature of which is kept below 1000‹ C. with the aid of the electric current so that the formation of clinker is avoided. During the intervals, the producer is at a standstill, but is so efficiently insulated that practically no fall in temperature occurs, and thus acts as an energy accumulator. The temperature is maintained between 600 and 800‹ C. so that two to five volumes of hydrogen to one volume of carbon monoxide are produced. The conductivity of the fuel is increased by the addition of alkalies such as potassium hydroxide, or iron compounds such as ferric hydroxide which catalytically accelerate the water gas reaction. These additions pass into the ash which may be mixed with a fresh charge, or the additions may be removed from the ash by extraction for re-use.
