Abstract

846,284. Reducing iron ores. NORSKHYDRO-ELEKTRISK KVAELSTOFAKTIESELSKAB. Jan. 7, 1957 [Jan. 7, 1956; Sept. 22, 1956], No. 634/57. Class 72 A process for the reduction of iron ore, which has a tendency to disintegrate during reduction, by hydrogen or hydrogen and carbon monoxide in an electric resistance furnace wherein some of the sponge iron produced is returned to the top of the furnace, comprises introducing the cold reducing gas, containing at least 90% hydrogen calculated on the reducing components of the gas, at the bottom of the furnace and supplying electrical energy to three electrodes in such manner that the zone between the lower pair serves for heating the gas to the reduction temperature. As shown, water gas mixed with recirculated gas is cleaned, compressed and expanded and supplied to the bottom of a furnace 4 having three electrodes 13, 14, 15, the zone between 13 and 14 being a heating zone to raise the temperature of the reducing gas to 900‹C., and the zone between the electrodes 14 and 15 being the reducing zone. The gas leaving the top of the furnace may have a content of steam and carbon dioxide of less than 35% and some water may be added with the ore and recirculated sponge iron at the top of the furnace. Hydrogen obtained from the electrolysis of water may be used as the only reducing gas and the process may be worked at a pressure of 25 kgs. per cm<SP>2</SP>. Specification 776,260 is referred to.
