Abstract
197,903. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Soc. Anon. J. Cockerill). Oct. 20, 1922. Briquetting-processes; dry processes of extracting metals.-Ores are reduced by intimately mixing them with a reducing agent such as carbon, adding thereto a quantity of water so as to displace and expel any occluded air in the materials and then subjecting the mixture to a very high pressure, the briquettes so formed being heated to a temperature short of fusion by means of a neutral flame in a neutral atmosphere. The furnace used is heated by gaseous liquid or powdered fuel, and the air supply is regulated to produce the neutral atmosphere. When the material treated has attained the temperature of reduction, the furnace flame is stopped, and the reaction and cooling are completed in the neutral atmosphere. Volatile impurities such as arsenic are eliminated during the treatment.
