Abstract

274,481. Racheeff, B., and Gofmann, M. July 15, 1926, [Convention date]. Chemical-reaction processes.-In a process for uniting metal parts, a mixture of powdered metals containing the same metal as the parts to be united is raised to a temperature such that the combustion of one or more of the metals is initiated, and the heat of combustion causes the parts to be united to be brought into contact with the same metal included in the uniting mixture at a temperature near the melting point. In one example, a mixture of powdered calcium and powdered aluminium in the proportion of 2 : 3 is incorporated in the proportion of one or two parts to nine to eight parts of powdered metal corresponding to the metals to be united. Thus for uniting cast iron, 85 per cent of powdered iron may be mixed with 15 per cent of calcium-aluminium mixture. The powdered metals are mixed into a paste by the addition of water or grease and placed between the parts to be united. The whole is then raised to a temperature of about 700‹ C. in a furnace or forge. This causes the metal in the mixture to become softened and to unite with the softened edges of the parts to be joined to produce a homogeneous weld.
