Abstract

776,260. Reducing iron ores. NORSK HYDRO-ELEKTRISK KVAELSTOFAKTIESELS-KAB. Feb. 1, 1955 [Feb. 2, 1954], No. 2997/55. Class 72 In a process for the reduction of iron ores with a reducing gas consisting of hydrogen and carbon monoxide and having at least 50 per cent hydrogen, in a shaft furnace provided with electrical resistance heating, the waste gas being freed from water and carbon dioxide and recycled, fresh gas being supplied in such proportions of hydrogen and carbon monoxide that the recycled gas contains at least 50 per cent hydrogen, part of the sponge iron in the cold state-is added to the ore at the top of the furnace and fresh reducing gas is introduced into the reducing zone between a lower and an upper electrode. As shown a shaft furnace 1 has a pair of electrodes 2 which may be in the form of grids. Fresh gas may be added from an annular pipe 7 situated immediately below the upper electrode. The hot gas rises through a preheating zone A and is extracted at 9 at a temperature between 100 and 200‹C., after which water vapour and carbon dioxide are removed and the clean gas, which contains more than 50 per cent hydrogen, is returned to the bottom of the furnace where it cools the sponge iron produced arid it itself heated. Some of the sponge iron discharged from the furnace and is returned to the charging end and, together with the sponge iron formed in the zone A, improves the electrical conductivity in the reducing zone B. It is stated that the electric power used in the reducing prcoess is only that required to 'replace heat lost by radiation and to supply the heat required.for the endothermic reaction.
