Abstract
<PICT:0407657/III/1> Transmuting elements.--This Specification, which does not admit of satisfactory abridgment, states that mercury is transmuted into gold when a mercurous salt becomes dissolved in a very concentrated solution of caustic potash. Mercurous nitrate is treated with a concentrated solution of caustic potash, the resulting mercurous oxide and potassium nitrate being admixed and heated with a further quantity of concentrated caustic potash to form a mass which solidifies on cooling. The mass is dissolved in strong nitric acid and on evaporation a block of potassium nitrate encrusted with a dark red substance is formed. The block is powdered and mixed with carbon and the mixture is heated in a retort, the residue being treated with strong nitric acid to produce a colloidal solution of gold. Metallic gold may be obtained from this solution by various methods. Rotary furnaces.--A rotary furnace is constituted by a hearth m in front of which revolves a cylinder n of sheet iron provided with a refractory lining o and a charging opening s. Upon revolving the cylinder, the charge distributes itself better because of a dividing wall t provided with air cooling tubes u.
