Abstract

Finely divided iron ore is mixed with finely divided medium to strongly caking coal and formed into pellets which are charged to a shaft furnace in which they are heated to such a temperature by upwardly flowing gases that the coal is carbonized and the ore partially reduced. The pellets then pass over a discharging edge at the base of the shaft, and fall out of contact with air to a furnace containing a turbulent bath of iron and slag where reduction of the ore is completed. The shaft may take the form of an annular kiln the vertical axis of rotation of which is offset from the centre of a circular discharge aperture in a stationary base, or may take the form of a stationary annular kiln from the base of which the pellets are removed by a rotary scraper. In yet another form the walls of the kiln are stationary while the base oscillates. The pellets as discharged from the shaft may contain carbon in excess of that required for final reduction, this excess being used to provide heat for final reduction and melting by combustion with a jet of air or oxygen.
