Abstract
Sulphur is recovered from the gases evolved during the smelting of pyrites by bringing the gases while still hot into contact with an equivalent amount of a gaseous, liquid or powdered solid reducing agent and passing the resultant gases and vapours through a catalytic chamber filled with brick or other contact material coated with sodium carbonate or other alkali metal compound mixed or not with an iron compound, e.g. English Red. Alternatively the alkali compound may be introduced into the shaft of the smelting furnace. The admixture with reducing agent may take place in or away from the furnace. Solid impurities may be removed from the gases, e.g. by a Cottrell apparatus, and the condensation of the sulphur may be similarly effected. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of iron or an iron compound as the catalyst, and any electrostatic process may be used to remove solid impurities and to condense the sulphur. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
