Abstract

Coke lumps produced from coal without additional materials are treated with dry gaseous chlorine or hydrochloric acid or a mixture of the two immediately after the coke has left the oven and before it has lost its heat. At the end of this treatment hydrofluoric acid may be used as an additional gaseous reagent whereby residual silica may be removed at e.g. 200 DEG C. and fluosilicic acid or its salts obtained. Volatile compounds of iron, aluminium and silicon are expelled at the higher temperatures of 900--1000 DEG C. and condensed. Sulphur in the form of sulphur chloride is also obtained, a more thorough expulsion of the sulphur occurring at a lower range of temperatures. In an example from 1000 kg. of washed coke containing 10 per cent of ash (consisting of about 5 per cent SiO2, 2,5 per cent Al2O3 and 2,5 per cent Fe2O3), and ,9 per cent of sulphur, the treatment with 213 kg. of chlorine produces 50 kg. FeCl3, 65 kg. AlCl3, 142 kg SiCl4, and 6,3 kg. S2Cl2.
