Abstract
305,578. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Feb. 7, 1928, [Convention date]. Silicon tetrachloride. - The production of anhydrous aluminium chloride from raw materials containing both alumina and silica in the presence of a reducing agent such as carbon or carbon monoxide is carried out with chlorine charged with silicon tetrachloride vapour in such amount that no simultaneous formation of silicon tetrachloride from the silica present can take place; alternatively excess of chlorine with respect to the tetrachloride may also be used, in which case some silicon tetrachloride is formed from the silica present. An example relates to chlorination by chlorine only, illustrating the simultaneous formation of silicon tetrachloride and aluminium chloride.
