Abstract

A mixture of silicon tetrafluoride and water vapour is generated by reacting hydrogen fluoride with silicon dioxide suspended in sulphuric acid. The suspension is maintained at a temperature between 225 DEG and 600 DEG F. The silica can be in the form of sand, and the sulphuric acid concentration is between 50% and 90% by weight. The silicon tetrafluoride may be hydrolysed to give silicon dioxide and the hydrogen fluoride produced recycled.
