Abstract

Lubricating oils are obtained by distilling under high vacuum and with superheated steam high boiling fractions of mineral oils or of oils obtained by low temperature carbonization processes, in presence of small quantities of the following substances, alone or mixed:-oxides, hydroxides, or carbonates of alkalies, of alkaline earths, or of metals; salts of the so-called metal acids. Purifying agents particularized are oxides of barium, calcium, and aluminium, hydroxides of potash, barium, calcium, and aluminium, carbonates of calcium and barium and sodium ferrite, aluminate, or ferri-aluminate. In an example, 3500 kilograms of mineral oil residue of specific gravity 0.940 are mixed with 175 kilograms of solid caustic potash and distilled, starting at about 180-220 DEG C. under a pressure reduced by 300 m.m., gradually rising to 400 DEG C. and 710 m.m. reduction of pressure, superheated steam being introduced throughout. The products are 4.3 per cent of gas oil, 18.7 per cent of spindle oil, 27.5 per cent of light machine oil, 29.9 per cent of heavy machine oil, 9.5 per cent of cylinder oil, and an asphaltic residue. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), any substance binding components containing sulphur and oxygen can be used as the purifying agent, and the use of steam or reduced pressure is optional. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
