Abstract
In the process described in the parent Specification, gases containing carbon dioxide free from oxygen or air or containing only a small proportion of oxygen, e.g. up to 2 per cent, are used as the oxidizing reaction gases such as the waste gases from Siemens-Martin furnaces. When the spongy iron is produced by the reduction of iron ores in the furnace, the carbon monoxide produced by such reduction is burnt by the introduction of oxidizing gases into the reduction zone, for example through the wall of the furnace.
